Council housing

There are three different ways in which you may be able to get housing from the Council:

  1. If you are homeless and a ‘vulnerable’ person.

Go to the Housing Department at the Civic Centre. They will need proof of your circumstances and information given by yourself about your medical condition. If, from the information provided, you are assessed as ‘vulnerable’ you may then be offered a place in a bed-and-breakfast hotel or other temporary housing, and eventually a tenancy for up to 2 years, after which the tenancy is reviewed.

  2. If you are already in a hostel or a ‘group home’, and your application is supported by your Care Co-ordinator (this is called a ‘Social A’.)

Fill in a Housing Application form (from the Housing Department in the Civic Centre), then talk to your Care Co-ordinator.

  3. If your application is supported on urgent medical grounds (this is called a ‘Medical A’.)

Fill in a Housing Application form (from the Housing Department at the Civic Centre) then complete a medical self assessment form provided by the Housing Department.

If you do not qualify for Council housing, you may still be able to get advice (see below.)

Housing Associations

There is a small amount of Housing Association accommodation in Hillingdon. This is similar to Council accommodation, only owned by an independent housing association rather than the Council.

How to apply: You have to apply through the Council’s Housing Department, as above. Tell them that you are interested in a Housing Association tenancy.

Getting a housing transfer

If you are already in Council housing, you can talk to your Housing Estates Officer about how to get a transfer. They will want to know your reasons, and that your rent is up to date.

You can also register with the Housing Department for a mutual exchange. For this you need to fill in a form from the Housing Department at the Civic Centre where you can also look at the list of other people wanting an exchange.

If you want to transfer out of Hillingdon, you can talk to your Housing Estates Officer about this. This can be difficult, depending on where you want to move to.

Other housing advice

If you are a Council tenant, the staff in your local Area Housing Office will be able to advise you about repairs, redecoration, fire safety, insurance, etc. (see your Tenant’s Handbook.)

If you are not a Council tenant, you can still get advice from the Housing Advice staff at the Civic Centre. They can advise on how to get private housing if you do not qualify for Council housing, and can also advise on problems with landlords, and other housing matters.

Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing is provided by the Housing Department for older people, normally over the age of 60, who are able to look after themselves, but who want the security of being able to obtain help if they need it. Sheltered housing consists of self-contained flats, grouped together with a resident warden available to provide some help and support.

supported housing

Some people may need more help and support for a time, and may wish to consider going to live in a ‘hostel’ or a ‘group home’ to prepare for more independent living, or until this extra support is no longer needed.

hostels

There are two residential hostels in Hillingdon for people with mental health problems:

Tasman House (22 places)
111 Maple Road
Hayes UB4 9LF
020 8845 6645

Hayes Park House (20 places)
Hayes End Road
Hayes UB4 8EW
020 8573 8900

Both hostels are in Hayes and are run by Social Services. They provide accommodation in single rooms with staff available 24 hours who can offer support and advice. The hostels aim to help people to prepare for more independent living, and are not intended to provide a permanent home. Staff work with residents to try to meet their individual needs and agree a care plan which is reviewed with the resident every three months.

How to apply: You should first discuss your needs with your Care Co-ordinator who will be able to give you more information. A booklet is available giving more details about each hostel.

Apart from the two Social Services Hostels in Hillingdon, there are also some hostels outside Hillingdon; for example those run by the Richmond Fellowship. Social workers, community mental health nurses and other professionals can also give information about these.

Group Homes

Social Services have five ‘group homes’ in Hillingdon. These are ordinary houses with single rooms for four or five people sharing kitchen, bathroom and sitting room. People in the group homes live independently, but are supported by staff from the hostels who visit regularly. Most people spend some time in one of the hostels before moving in to a group home.

A group home may be used as a preparation for moving on to independent housing, although for some people the combination of independence and support in a group home may meet a long-term need.

How to apply: You should first discuss your needs with your Care Co-ordinator, who will be able to give you more information.

Ealing Family Floating Support Scheme

St James House
105-113 The Broadway
West Ealing
London W13 9BE

Ealing Family operates a floating support scheme for people with long term mental health problems. People eligible for the scheme need to be single, on CPA and either homeless or on the council’s housing waiting list.

The Supported Housing Officer can provide assistance with resettlement, budgeting, benefit claims or emotional issues. The aim of the project is to help tenants get to the point where they no longer need the support worker who can then ‘float’ off to support another tenant.

Richmond Fellowship

The Richmond Fellowship has three group homes and a flat in Hayes with a total of 19 places. There is support available from a Supported Housing Worker.

Hillingdon Mind

Hillingdon Mind in partnership with Notting Hill Housing Trust has developed a supported housing project for people with severe and enduring mental health problems. We have five two-bedroom houses and four one bedroom flats. We offer a flexible level of support that aims to be unintrusive, encourage independence and lessen the need for hospital admissions.
